Ropes are primarily made of synthetic materials such as PE, PP, PA and polyester. Ropes of natural fibre are still manufactured, but only in small quantities, as synthetic ropes are more wear-resistant and do not absorb water or rot.

Ropes are primarily manufactured as 3- and 4-strand, crossbraided, roundbraided and plaited.
